A toy hauler is a great way to bring your powersports vehicle on your RV trip without the hassle of towing a second trailer or traveling with two tow vehicles. However, improper loading can damage your toy hauler or powersports vehicle. That is why the experts at Pete’s RV have created this guide. By following it, the process of loading up your toy hauler will be made easier and less likely to result in damage to your vehicles.

Prepare Your Toy Hauler

While prep work might not be the most thrilling part of owning a toy hauler or powersports vehicle, a little bit of preparation can go a long way towards helping you avoid an accident. Start by checking your tire pressure. If the tires are not at the pressure recommended by your owner’s manual, they will be more susceptible to wear and blowouts. Being able to see others is vital when it comes to safe towing, so make sure you can see the whole length of your trailer in your mirrors. Being able to be seen by others is also very important, so make sure your brake lights and turn signals function well and shine bright enough to be visible.

Distribute the Weight

It may seem obvious, but it is important that you remember that attaching a toy hauler will affect the weight balance of your tow vehicle, which in turn affects how it drives. Do what you can to create and maintain the ideal ratio of 60% of your weight being in front of the front axle and 40% behind it. The weight should also be evenly distributed from left to right. This will help you maintain control of your vehicle.

Loading

Once you have figured out how you will distribute the weight, it is time to start the loading process itself. Start with your tow vehicle in park and chock the wheels to keep everything steady. Lower your gate to convert it to a loading ramp. Using your ramp at a low angle will make it easier to load, so aim for the ground. Drive your vehicle up slowly and turn off your engine once you get inside the bay to avoid fumes.

Secure Your Vehicle

Before you set off, you need to secure your powersports vehicle. Not doing so can result in it being jostled around, leading to damage to the vehicle and interfering with your weight redistribution. Tie your vehicle down using ratchet straps or D-ring tie-downs. Give your vehicle a few tugs and shakes to make sure it has been securely fastened.
